Palliative care – what is it?

The word “palliative” is derived from the Latin “palliare”, meaning “to encase” or “to cover”. Palliative comes from Latin and means “soothing”. This term refers to efforts to improve the quality of life of patients with incurable diseases and limited life expectancy . In the context of palliative care, not only physical complaints but also psychosocial stress and spiritual needs are taken into account. In addition, the personal environment of the patient is included in the care. The goals of palliative care are to alleviate stressful factors and to enable the patient to live and die as independently as possible in familiar surroundings .

An important feature of palliative care in contrast to conventional outpatient care is the particularly close cooperation of the specially qualified nursing staff with e.g. B. relatives, doctors or psychologists .

As an outpatient care service in Kiel specializing in general and specialized outpatient palliative care, we can play an important role in the care of patients with a progressive, incurable disease and help them stay in their home for as long as possible familiar domestic environment.
